Can You See a Psychologist Through DVA?
If you're a veteran experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties or other mental health concerns, you may be wondering whether you can access psychology services through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA).
The answer is yes—many eligible veterans can access psychological treatment through DVA.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances and the type of DVA card you hold.
In general:
White Card holders may be eligible for treatment relating to accepted conditions, including many mental health conditions linked to service.
Gold Card holders are generally able to access treatment for clinically necessary conditions.
If you're unsure about your eligibility, your GP or DVA can help clarify what you're entitled to.
Do I need a referral?
In many cases, yes.
Your GP can discuss your mental health concerns and, where appropriate, provide a referral for psychological treatment under DVA arrangements.
If you're unsure how the process works, I’m happy to answer general questions before your first appointment.
What happens at the first appointment?
Many people worry that they'll need to tell their entire life story straight away.
In reality, the first session is usually about getting to know you.
We'll discuss:
what has brought you to therapy
the difficulties you're currently experiencing
what you would like to change
your goals for therapy
There is no expectation that you need to talk about traumatic experiences before you feel ready.
Mental health challenges don't always look like PTSD
Many veterans seek support for concerns that extend beyond trauma.
These may include:
anxiety
depression
sleep difficulties
anger or irritability
relationship difficulties
adjustment to civilian life
stress
grief and loss
Sometimes these challenges develop many years after leaving Defence.
Seeking support isn't a sign that you've failed to cope—it simply recognises that circumstances change, and different challenges arise throughout life.
